Oh Rats!

The first thing you think about when someone says they want a pet is probably not a rat, but these small little critters can make wonderful members of the family! Rats are generally very clean, sociable little animals who are among the most interactive and intelligent of the small exotic mammals.

Life and society: While they can be very well loved, rats have a short life expectancy; only 2-4 years at most.  They tend to do best with another rat friend for companionship, though an older rat may not always accept a new cagemate, and it’s best to introduce rats at a young age.  Be sure not to mix intact males and females unless you are planning on lots of rat babies!

Feeding and care tips: Rats are easy to feed with formulated rodent blocks and a sippy water bottle (be sure to change the water every day!).  Rats like to run on wheels, but sometimes their toes get caught in metal spokes, so solid plastic wheels are a safer bet to let your rat run to their heart’s content! Rats also love burrowing in their cage bedding.  Because they do defecate and urinate around their cage it’s important to change their bedding regularly!

Respiratory problems can occur in glass cages where ammonia builds up, so wire cages are recommended to maximize air flow and circulation.  Cedar bedding can also cause respiratory problems due to its strong scent, so other beddings materials such as shredded paper are recommended.

Fun fact about rats: They can have red tears! Special glands near their eyes produce porphyrins, which stain their tears red. This can be a sign of stress or illness, so if you see these red tears be sure to give us a call!

Vet visits: One of the most common reasons we see rats as veterinarians is for lumps and bumps as they grow older.  Rats are prone to developing fast growing masses that can grow as large as the rat itself! Fortunately most of these lumps are benign, but it’s important we remove them promptly before they get too big.

If you have any questions or concerns about your rat, don’t hesitate to give us a call!
